Role: Occupational Therapist - Early Childhood Education & Care

Location: Hobart, Tasmania – remote and virtual opportunities available for applicants in other areas

Base Centre:   Goodstart Glenorchy and Claremont

Employment Type:   Part time – 2 days / 16 hours per week  

                        12 month fixed term contract

We have an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist to join our team. The Occupational Therapist will perform a range of professional, educational and administrative functions to support the Occupational Therapy program as part of the organisation’s Social Inclusion Strategy. You will be part of a transdisciplinary team comprised of Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, and Social Workers to provide specific advice and coaching of strategies to improve the outcomes of highly vulnerable children within Goodstart Enhancing Children's Outcomes (EChO) Centres.  


Your Impact  

  • Be empowered to drive continuous change and find new and innovative ways of working to achieve goals
  • Support and empower early years educators to build the capability to observe, identify and explain any concerns related to the learning, development and well-being of children within the centre.
  • Promote an integrated, evidence-informed approach to deliver improved outcomes for children and families
  • Provide consultation and coaching around evidence-informed practices that enhance children’s Early Childhood Education & Care as it relates to Occupational Therapy practice
  • Create strong external linkages to community supports and services that will best meet the needs of children and families.
  • Support our educators to communicate and engage with parents around the needs of their child
  • Provide support to Goodstart educators, Centre Directors and Centre Support staff to create environments that encourage and support children’s access and participation, and build their capacity within self-help and self-management, play and interactions, and social/emotional development.
  • Contribute to the development of resources for use in centres
  • Complete formal and informal assessments
  • Deliver training as required to centres and the larger network of centres within the organisation.
  • Provide regular information about the progress of the program children’s outcomes
  • Be a Clinical educator for Occupational Therapy students as required
  • Deliver Occupational Therapy services that are grounded in established organisational Practice Frameworks, adapted to support the needs of individual Children and different Centre teams.
  • Deliver Occupational Therapy services in alignment with the organisational approach to children with varied funding and governance considerations (e.g. School Readiness Funding, NDIS)



You’ll help achieve this by  

  • Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Therapy and registration with AHPRA
  • Strong understanding of child development (birth - 5 years)
  • Experience working in the early childhood context, and understanding of the key occupational needs of children 0-5
  • Experience working with vulnerable children and families
  • Understanding of relevant early childhood frameworks and standards (e.g. National Quality Standard and Early Years Learning Framework) 
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out participation-focused interventions
  • Understanding of evidence-based outcome measures such as Goal Attainment Scaling and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, communication, negotiation and coaching skills
  • Demonstrated documentation skills to analyse and report on relevant key performance indicators
  • Maintain a high level of ethical and professional behaviour, including preserving the confidentiality of children and families.
